Wait, There’s Good News Too

Before I get lost in the thickets of NaNoWriMo and the final volume of the Spire of Time trilogy, I have a bit of an announcement to make. And I’m hoping that everyone will be both understanding and excited. There’s good news and bad news.

I’m going to start with the bad news. I’d let you vote, but, well, I don’t feel like waiting anyway.

Second Thoughts, my Mirrors of Bershan prequel novella, is not going to be published on December 10th.

Please don’t beat me up for this. There’s good news, I swear, and it’s worth not beating me up. Before I give you that, let me explain why I’m pushing off the publication of Second Thoughts until sometime in 2014. You might like the reason.

I’m turning it into a full novel.

There are good reasons for that. Second Thoughts has always hovered on the upper end of novella territory. It’s taken some serious work to keep it from breaching the 40,000 word barrier. I’ve also had to skimp on some things that, in hindsight, would make the story better. I wasn’t entirely sure how necessary those things were until I gave the novella to a beta who hadn’t read either Bound or Possession. She asked a bunch of questions about those things I hadn’t explained enough or had skimped on. Then she asked some more questions and mentioned things she wished there was more of. Thank you, Amanda!

I’ve been mulling these comments since I got them. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that the only way to make this one truly stand alone was to give up the idea that it could be a novella. It was going to have to become a novel. And the moment I made the decision to do that, my muse sat up and started pouring ideas into my brain, making it clear I’d made the right choice. Thank god I’m a fast typist, or I might have missed some stuff. I think I got it all though.

It is going to require redrafting the whole thing I think, but that’s okay. It’s going to be better. It’s going to be worth waiting for. I’m excited to write it. I think this might be what I do over Christmas. A girl’s gotta keep busy, right? I usually write over the holidays anyway, and into the new year. Sort of hit the ground running, you know?

Speaking of the new year, this is where we get to the actual good news. You see, there is something else on the publishing horizon that you might want to hear about. I mean, there’s a final volume of the trilogy left to release, right? That’s right, The Nine, book 3 of the Mirrors of Bershan, is the good news. I’m announcing a publication date.

January 13, 2014, you’ll be able to finish the journey with Faylanna and Tavis.

See, I told you it was worth not beating me up for. :) The cover’s in the works now, and I’ll be sending the manuscript off to my editor soon. Final edits will likely be my first post-NaNo task.

So, anyone excited enough for this bit of good news that they’ll forgive the bad? I really hope so.
